31 Days of Fishbowl Grace:Practical Tips for Women in Ministry

31 Days of Fishbowl Grace: DO {Day 11}

Today’s catch phrase is:

Do things you don’t think you can do.

I’m talking to myself here too. In fact, most of my ministry life has been characterized by doing things I never thought I could do. It’s part of living by grace.

I’m not talking about doing everything that needs to be done, or forcing yourself to do things that you don’t have the ability to do (like crafting or musical involvement, etc.). I’m referring to stepping outside of your comfort zone and letting God direct you into things you think you can’t do- things HE wants to equip you to do!

Recently I inadvertently made myself an example of this. I was asked to speak for a few minutes at a coming event. And, you must know that I am NOT a public speaker. Such things terrify me. But I said ‘yes’ and told them up front that I will probably cry and my voice will shake and it will come out all wrong. That’s ok, they said.

Then I went home and hardly slept all night for thinking, “WHY did I agree to this?! WHAT was I thinking?!” But I’m gonna do it, because I know God wants me to. He has given me something to say, and I need to follow through with it.

And there’s one more thing. I LOVE to play the piano. And our church has a beautiful grand that I adore. But you know what? I hate being in front of people. I’m a behind-the-scenes kind of gal who likes to be rather invisible. Yet, I am responsible to provide the music every week. In this area, things have improved very much. I used to be sick before I played, my heart would race, and I’d make tons of mistakes from nerves. But I guess I hid it well because some folks have been shocked to learn how very nervous I was. I do still get nervous, but after making myself get up and do it for so many years, it does get easier. {Except for the Christmas cantata every year and playing for funerals. They don’t get any easier.} 🙂 I still bow my heart before each service and say, “God, I need You. I can’t do this. Do it through me.”

The point is this: You should at least be willing to do things you don’t think you can do. Because….those difficult things you’re holding out on and secretly hoping God won’t ask you to do? He probably will. And then He’ll give you the grace to do it so that you can give Him ALL of the glory when it is accomplished!

So, deep breath:

Do things you don’t think you can do.

Let’s Chat: What are some things that you do now that you didn’t think you could do? Do you find it exciting to watch God enable you? I’d love to hear your heart on this topic!

  1. Sounds like me!! I am a bundle of nerves every time I play the piano at church. Public speaking makes me sick to my stomach!! Thank you for the encouragement and reminder that I’m not alone in these feelings. Would you consider putting all of the “fishbowl grace” blogs into a short book form? So practical and helpful! I have been telling my husband about your great ideas.

  2. I do not mind public speaking…it’s the one on one I have a hard time with. I usually go into the kitchen to “help” at our food fellowships. My husband is great at speaking with others & I usually want to head right home. The Lord called my husband to preach during a revival service when he was 38. I surrendered to serve God any where when I was just a little girl. We have been at our church now for four years…I love it! Yes, I know the Lord wants us to step out of our comfort zone. I am so thankful He is there to make that step with us!

  3. Very true! We will miss out on so many blessings, abounding fruit but most importantly “GLORIFYING OUR GOD” if we say no to opportunities given to us.
