31 Days of Fishbowl Grace:Practical Tips for Women in Ministry

31 Days of Fishbowl Grace: LAUGH {Day 24}

Today’s catch phrase is:

Laugh more today than you did yesterday.

Now, I’m not talking about foolishness or immaturity. There’s plenty too much of that in this world. I’m not talking about sarcasm, either {that’s a topic for another day!}. I’m talking about good old fashioned  belly laughing that is healing for body and soul.

One recent study has shown that children laugh more than 300 times per day. {It’s true- they do!} Adults only laugh an average of 20 times per day. And while we like to say that “my life is too serious to laugh that much” {I’ve said it!} it just isn’t a good excuse.

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t laugh nearly as much as I should. I deal with adrenal fatigue, and experts say that one of the best things to relax the adrenal gland is belly laughing. My husband even asks me sometimes when I complain about my adrenal pain, “How much did you laugh today?” And then he proceeds to tell a joke that he’s told me a hundred times, yet he expects a fresh laugh! 🙂

No really, my husband can always make me laugh. He was funny from the day I met him, and still is. He just has a really funny way about him that most times only comes out around me. I love that about him. He is a balm to my soul.

Maybe you have a family member who is like this in your life, or maybe you have other people in your life who make you laugh when you need it most. We have one family in particular that when we have them over, we all end up laughing so hard we cry. It’s such a balm to our hearts! I also know of a pastor’s wife in a province nearby who calls a certain lady when she needs to laugh. She just picks up the phone, and says something like “What have you got today? I need to laugh.”

You know, I am not that person who makes others laugh- it’s just not my personality. But I know I need to do better at seeing the bright side and letting others make me laugh. Maybe you need to learn how to laugh. There was a time in my life when I had to do that. It felt wrong and unnatural because of some teachings I had been exposed to…and from lack of practice. But over time your laugh can develop, and you might be surprised how it blesses others. So…

Laugh more today than you did yesterday.

“Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” Psalm 16:11

Let’s Chat: Do you laugh easily and often? Have you always been that way? Has ministry changed how often or how deeply you are able to laugh? Do you have people in your life who can always make you laugh? Share your thoughts….make me laugh! 🙂
