31 Days of Fishbowl Grace: RECORD {Day 25}

Today’s catch phrase is:

Record God’s blessings.

I started my first journal when I was a little girl, probably in second or third grade, from what I can tell. It’s actually quite funny to go back and read some of my humorous thought processes. Somewhere in my middle school years, my journaling fizzled out until I went to college. Then I resumed writing with a passion. It was a time in my life when God was moving in so many obvious and life changing ways. I felt that I just HAD to write it all down.

Soon after my husband and I got married, I decided to journal about our first year of marriage. Well, if you know my pregnancy story, then you know that that ‘marriage’ journal turned out to be a pregnancy journal, and what a wild ride it was. I’m so glad I kept those detailed notes, because years later I used it to write my book.

All that to say, it is so important to record the workings of God in our lives. Whether you are involved in recording your 1,000 gifts, or whether you keep a thankfulness journal- it really doesn’t matter how it’s done. The point is that we write those things down and remember them. It works wonders for a discouraged soul to go back and read of past blessings, miracles, and answers to prayer.

As our life has gotten more busy, I have actually journaled less. But I have a little tradition that still helps me record blessings. My mom is the one who modeled this for me while we were growing up. She kept a calendar in her desk drawer and every day she wrote blessings or events on that day’s space.

When I became an adult, I followed suit and bought a new {small} calendar each year just so I could write at least one thing down each day. I have done that for over 10 years now, with the exception of this year, when I began the 1,000 gifts challenge so that I could involve our children more in our thanksgiving. I want them to develop at an early age the habit of relishing God’s blessings….and writing them down.

This verse is amazing:

 “Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.” Psalm 40:5

God’s words through David here really blew my mind as I meditated on them. He is basically saying, You can’t possibly record all of God’s blessings or His thoughts toward you. There’s no number high enough to contain all of His works.

But you know what? We can sure try! Through all of life and ministry, don’t neglect to

Record God’s blessings.
