31 Days of Fishbowl Grace:Practical Tips for Women in Ministry

31 Days of Fishbowl Grace: SING {Day 5}

Today’s catch phrase is:

Sing. Through joy or tears, sing.

I will admit, I’ve completely lost my song before. Several times. After we left our first ministry, I couldn’t sing. Every time I tried, a huge lump came up in my throat and no notes came out. I cried through every service in the little church where we were temporarily attending. Whenever my husband and I were asked to sing {which we normally LOVE doing together}, we turned the opportunities down.

It was probably about a year before our hearts and voices knew song again. My husband was in between ministries, and working on a dairy farm. On some weekends we traveled to a church about two hours away to fill in while they were looking for a pastor. We would hop across the border and get groceries in Maine, and then we would drive back home late at night like crazy people so my husband could get up at 3:30 AM the next morning to milk cows.

During one such weekend, we were asked to sing in the evening service at that little ocean-side church. And we both agreed, without even talking about it. We sang “My Song of Jesus” with the feeling and sincerity that only comes out of trials. I choked up during the last verse, but I made it through the song.

It didn’t really hit us until we were driving home. We had sung together! Our song had come back.

In truth, it was one of the first tangible signs that God was healing our hearts, and possibly preparing us for future ministry. The desire to minister and bless others was creeping back into our hearts.

Since that year, we’ve encountered other difficulties and trials, of course. Such is life. But there’s been one main difference.

We kept singing. Not just publicly in church {though that is sometimes the hardest place to sing}. But in private- at home. When it’s not homeschooling hours, I enjoy keeping instrumental hymns playing and sometimes praise choruses to uplift my soul. I hum along, sing along…sometimes through tears. It works wonders to ease stress and remind me that God is in control! Many times we praise God out of obedience, and not according to our feelings.

“Some through great trials, but God gives a song; In the night season, and all the day long.”

“I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.” Psalm 77:6

“But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night.” Job 35:10

Dear friend, no matter what happens, don’t lose your song.

Sing. Through joy or tears, sing.

  1. Last year my husband and I left the church we were attending due to a conflict. To me, singing is what calmed me throughout all the sorrows of that time. We love the hymnbook “Hymns Modern and Ancient.” It has a lot of the newer hymns. One that really touched us through the hard time of hurt feelings was “Jesus Draw Me Ever Nearer” by Keith & Kristyn Getty. Several times I would start singing just to break down in tears. Thankfully God has given us a wonderful new church family.

    Jesus draw me ever nearer
    As I labour through the storm.
    You have called me to this passage,
    and I’ll follow, though I’m worn.

    May this journey bring a blessing,
    May I rise on wings of faith;
    And at the end of my heart’s testing,
    With Your likeness let me wake.

    Jesus guide me through the tempest;
    Keep my spirit staid and sure.
    When the midnight meets the morning,
    Let me love You even more.

    Let the treasures of the trial
    Form within me as I go –
    And at the end of this long passage,
    Let me leave them at Your throne.

  2. A song of praise to the Lord in our greatest trials is one of the most powerful spiritual weapons against the enemy! Oh what can the enemy do with a song of praise……
    When we are bound in spiritual chains….praise
    When the night is so dark the light seems so far and non exsistant….praise
    When we are broken, weeping, hurting and battle scarred…..praise
    When the valley is complete and we are finally on the mountain top…..praise
    Oh that we would learn to pull this precious weapon out of our sheaves launching it toward the enemy piercing the lies, breaking the bands and allowing God to use it to set us free.

    Thank you Leah for this precious reminder…… its so easy to forget this precious truth!
    Laurie Isaiah 41:9-10
