Guess what? You have in your home, right now, everything you need to make this shabby heart wreath. A friend and I whipped a few of these up a couple of weeks ago, and they were just downright fun to make! This is the perfect craft even for the non-crafty person. If you can tie a knot, you can make this wreath! 🙂
Here’s what you need:
1 wire hanger
An old T-shirt {the colour of your choice}
Ribbon or string
Wire cutters and scissors
Here’s how to make it:
Cut the ‘hook’ part of the hanger off with wire cutters. Bend the twisted part down and shape the hanger into a heart.
Cut the T-shirt into pieces that are about 6 inches long and about 1 inch wide. These strips do NOT need to be perfect. We’re aiming for the shabby look here! You’ll need about 100 strips per wreath.
Once you’ve got your strips cut, begin tying them around the wire hanger like this:
Continue tying strips around the heart until the entire heart is filled and the strips are tight fitting. You may need to trim the outside edge to make the heart shape look more uniform. Some types of T-shirt material stretch more than others when you tie them. Don’t be afraid to trim the wreath so the ends of the strips don’t “flop” over.
Tie on a bow with the ribbon of your choice. Tie an extra T-shirt strip on the back of the wreath so you can hang up the wreath.
And viola! You’ve made a heart wreath.
This is a relaxing, no stress craft that would be great for a ladies meeting or even for middle school aged children or teenaged gals. If you make one, I’d love to see it! Feel free to post your photos on Facebook so all of us can enjoy your creativity. 🙂
