{Ahem} First up, apologies to all of my email followers who received this half-finished post in your inboxes yesterday! In the transfer from Windows Live Writer, somehow I hit ‘publish’ instead of ‘post draft.’ This is the full post…which is actually kind of outside my blogging niche, but who can resist sharing a recipe that will delight the little people in our lives?
I have a sweet Aunt who has Crohn’s disease. Which means she can’t eat popcorn (among other things). When I was younger, my Mom used to make a treat for my Aunt that we enjoyed tasting whenever Mom made a batch. We called it popcorn snow. Now I make it for my kids, and they just love it. It has amazing flavour, even without heavy seasoning, and it’s just plain fun to make and eat!
Confession…I love it too.
A few weeks ago, when Handsome Husband was away at camp, the kids and I had a movie night.
During our self-proclaimed intermission, we made popcorn snow.
It’s that time of year, isn’t it? It’s February- lovingly dubbed ‘the armpit of the calendar.’ I don’t know what kind of winter you are experiencing, but some of our northern, gray winter days just need a little pick-me-up! I guarantee that popcorn snow will make your kids squeal with delight. (It might give you a mess to clean up, too, but it’s so worth it!)
Here is the recipe and the ‘how to’ instructions for making popcorn in a pot:
Splash of oil
1/4 cup unpopped popcorn kernels
Salt, pepper and butter to taste
Other seasonings, if desired
Heat oil, add popping corn, and shake over medium heat until all kernels are popped.
Pour popped corn into blender, food processor, or mill (I used my smoothie maker). Apply power button until the popcorn is finely ground and begins to resemble snow.
Add seasonings if desired. Keep in mind that butter will moisten the popcorn and will give it some weight. Do this if you don’t want the popcorn blowing all over the room as your children discover how lightweight it is. 🙂
I have not tried this with microwave popcorn, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. If you try it, let me know how it comes out.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
Popcorn.

This is cute…never would have thought of it!
I wouldn’t have either…but I grew up seeing my Mom make it. Kids love it! 🙂
Hmmm…I wonder how your aunt can still eat this? I have trouble with corn products (I’m technically allergic, so I try to avoid.) So does blending it make it easier to digest?
My mom reminded me that she used to take out the kernel and then grind it up. So that is probably how she could eat it. It would be fluffier that way. 🙂
