Today’s catch phrase is
Help your husband.
Wait. Isn’t he supposed to help you? You know…with dishes and laundry and kids getting baths and bed….
Well, that is a blessing indeed! Yet God makes it clear in the book of Genesis that we as married women are to focus on helping our husbands. Personally, I think our marriage got off to a bad start with this. I weathered a life threatening illness during our first year, which left me weak for years after that, and needing a lot of extra help. Somewhere in between “I do” and the fog of the early years of marriage and raising babies, he had become my helper.
I’ll save the topic of guilt for another day, but suffice it to say that I bore my own share of it when it seemed like our roles were flip-flopped. And because there was no quick fix, him being my helper became our way of life.
But I’ve gradually made steps to change that, and now it feels as though our roles are as God intended, albeit the fact that we are still human!
I try to ask questions every so often to find out exactly what my husband wants/needs from me, especially when it comes to ministry. Of course every situation varies, so I won’t assume that my set of “helps” looks like yours. I do a lot of detail remembering and planning assistance for my husband, but not much typing of notes or office work. And of course that comes after the regular housekeeping and childrearing that are born with every day.
I don’t know about you, but when I stop and think about the fact that I am HIS helper {helpmeet}, it takes a lot of pressure off of me! It’s not that I have a ton of stuff to do and I need help. It’s that my husband has a busy schedule and I can fill some of those needy spots while serving first as wife and mother. When those are prioritized, everything else falls into place.
So, why not take a moment and really evaluate whether or not you are being a true helpmeet to your husband. Are you helping him, or is he helping you?
Help your husband.
It would be so nice to be able to find a Godly site for single women that God did not bless with a husband.
Aw, I’m sorry that this post touched a soft spot for you. Most of the posts in this series I did gear toward women in general since I do have several single women who read my blog. But I did need to throw one in for those of us who are married. Hugs to you!
