Whether it’s a surgery or a family death, a deep disappointment or an injury or sickness, a ‘down’ day or just the desire for a friend, the needs around us in our own churches are overwhelming. If your prayer list looks like ours, it is overflowing with physical needs. More often people are added than they are taken off the list. So there’s always someone to help and encourage. The one thing I implore you not to do {except on select occasions}?
Don’t say, “Let me know if you need anything.”
I’ve been guilty of saying it, and then quickly realized what I had just done. Here’s how it usually goes when we quip that non-helpful phrase:
“Ok, I’ll let you know,” says everyone always.
“I’ll call Mrs. Grasshopper and tell her I need a meal today,” says and does no one ever!
As a pastor’s wife, I learned this lesson right quick by being plunged into a small community that was very self sufficient. I had to get creative when it came to reaching out, and yes, sometimes my efforts were insulted. Like the time a family called and fussed at me for sending TOO MUCH food. I suggested that they put some of it in their freezer and then hung up and stopped the food chain. 🙂
So, part of just digging in and doing something is knowing up front that you might do the wrong thing sometimes, or at the wrong time. BUT at least folks will know you were thinking of them and that you cared enough to try.
Here is a (by no means exhaustive) list of ideas for helping others. Some are ‘in the box’ and some are ‘out of the box.’ Don’t be afraid to get rid of the box and let God lead you in His own unique ways. After all, who knows people better than He does? It brings so much joy to know that your act of kindness was inspired by and used by God!

Let’s Chat: What would you add to my list?
The best part is that, as Leah’s husband, I’ve seen her do so many of these things for others. I love your heart, Sweetheart!
I enjoy doing these things together with you. 🙂
I love this list! One of my goals this year is to call, write a note or do something to encourage or help a member in our church each day. Thank you for some ideas I had not thought of, especially love the snowman idea. What a fun thing that would be to do with some our teens for our senior members!
That is a great goal that you have for this year! It will be neat for you to watch God open the doors for you to do that. I’m glad the list gave you some new ideas. 🙂
Love these!
🙂 xo
Great post, Leah!! Can I print this and share this with the ladies in our church? (of course giving you credit!) 🙂
Yes, feel free to print and share! Hope it is a blessing.
I loved this list. Very extensive. I think doing these small acts of kindness for your church, or even just humans in general, makes me the world a better place. Thank you for sharing.
I am visiting via your comment on the SITS link tonight via facebook. So nice to meet you : ).
Take care, Becky
Hello – I’m Joanne from our SITS tribe!! This would be a great list for anyone, even those like myself, who don’t go to church. I love the suggestions for seniors. 🙂

Leah,
Thanks for all these ideas! I’m very involved in my church, but recently my 32 yr old son was diagnosed with cancer. During this time I would hear let me know what I can do, I’ll be praying for you ect. But I never heard a prayer, and like you mentioned, I didn’t call anyone asking. So I’ve decided to start a ministry called Above and Beyond. Any other ideas you have would be appreciated and I will share mine as well.
May God continue to Bless You
Leah: Thank you for this great list! I have the wonderful opportunity to serve as elder and shepherd at my church. I frequently call and send cards to those I have responsibility for (and others, too) but it seems I want to do more but didn’t know where to start. Then, I found this great article of yours! It not only gave me some great ideas, it truly inspired me! I have shared it with our entire elder team. Thank you for your thoughtfulness in actions in your church and for the thoughtfulness of sharing these ideas with others.
